With less than a month until the Christmas holiday period begins, make sure you're prepared for public holiday entitlements and shut down periods.
Staff are entitled to up to four public holidays during the festive season, depending on their work or shift pattern. There will also be differences for casual and on-call workers so a holidays and leave tool has been developed to work out employee entitlements.
In 2010 an amendment to the Holidays Act saw changes to the treatment of holidays and leave during a mandatory closedown or shut down period.
If your business shuts down during the Christmas and New Year period with employees away on annual holidays then those employees are entitled to be paid for any public holidays they would have otherwise have worked if the business was operating.

BAD DEBT DEDUCTIONS
There is an allowable deduction for bad debts where:
- The decision to "write off" the debt is a genuine commercial decision. It is not necessary to show that legal or collection action has been taken to recover the debt in circumstances where this action would be futile.
- To support the decision to "write off" the debt there is a director's resolution or an authorisation by a senior employee.
- The required accounting/journal entries made to write off the debt in the books must have occurred before balance date.
The write off also provides a GST recovery.

| Think About This: |
"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald

| Did You Know? |
It is estimated that a person will die from total lack of sleep sooner -10 days or so-than from starvation (at least a few weeks normally).
Our eyes remain the same size from birth onward, but our noses and ears never stop growing.

| Worth a Thought: |
|
I read a quote recently (can't recall by whom):
"I'd sooner be poor and surrounded by wealthy and successful people and have a chance of employment and personal success than be poor and surrounded by more poor and unsuccessful people offering no chance of success."
