DISASTER PLANNING
Two Simple Tests

Natural disasters in New Zealand occur outside of the main centres and won’t impact to any large extent on the core services of any metropolitan area for more than a few hours.

Almost every business owner in New Zealand would have been in their right mind thinking or saying this 12 months ago. Who dare says it now?

Want to know how you, your team and your business would perform in an emergency?

Test One: Walk to your business switchboard and, without warning to anyone anywhere, turn the power off. And dare yourself to leave it off for at least an hour, if not two.

Observe and record by writing down everything that happens. What goes a little bit wrong? What goes really wrong? How does everyone cope? Commit to putting in systems, procedures and standby tools and equipment that can cope next time the plug is pulled.

Test Two: Stand up and YELL at everyone that they must leave your building immediately by the fastest route possible. No time for an explanation. No time to consider what to take, what to leave behind.

Observe and record by writing down everything that happens. Where did people go? What did they stop to take with them? How did they respond? Where did they gather? Was a head count carried out? If they had to stay outside all day, would they be warm and dry? Could they advise their families?

Put in place emergency measures for yourself, your team and your business. And then test those measures. Your team will grow in personal confidence when they know there is a procedure to follow.Content here.
PS - Maybe it's best to give your team a warning that you will be practising an emergency evacuation otherwise you might create panic but understand that real emergencies don't come wth a warning.

BUSINESS TIP
Be Brave - Start Again
Many Christchurch business owners are having to start again, from the rubble strewn ground, and build a new business. Some have taken it hard and others are strangely motivated by their circumstances to take a clean sheet and say this is a once only opportunity to put all my knowledge, experience and expertise into building the dream business I always wanted.

If you are still in business (or reside outside Christchurch) ask yourself, is this my ideal business? If disaster struck and I had to start again, what would I keep, what would I change? If you are not running your ideal business, then how can you be fully committed and passionate?

INSURANCE TIP
So you think you know what's in your policy?
Take it from me, you probably don't. You will have insurance for what you didn't consider was insured and there will be assets or losses you think are covered, which are not. If you are Christchurch based and making an earthquake related business claim, you'll know what I mean.

If you've never made a claim before but are now on high alert as to what disaster can fall upon you, talk to a Christchurch business owner who is making a claim and learn what they are learning - and then check your policy.

If you are not Christchurch based, go back to your broker and re-create the earthquake disaster and test every area of your policy. If there's a gap, fill it.

Disaster is worse than the premium
Quick Quote:
Steve Gurney on Resilience.  Multisport and motivational hero

My house was munted by the earthquake but It’s important to put a limit on the time we allow to be sad about it, or any personal tradegy, (perhaps a few weeks) before we then move on past it, look up to the future, roll our sleeves up and get on with the new world.
